Drew Mackie, Steve Dale, John Popham and I have concluded our work with Nominet Trust … but we haven’t stopped developing ideas on where next with social technology later in life, and hope you will continue too.
I’ve posted a long piece http://socialreporters.net/?p=1018 reviewing the work so far and suggesting how we might move from…[Read more]- 1 person likes this.

David,
thanks – once more – for pulling together all of these various strands, and making some sense of what (for me) is still a very complex and confused picture. There are lots of players, stakeholders and vested interests at work here, so finding some way through this cacophony and making a valid and valued contribution to improve the lives of…[Read more]

Thanks Steve – a workshop is a really good idea, particularly if it is around digital tech “in life” not just later life.
It could be used to test and evolve ideas we have developed during this exploration and others, for example:
- the use of characters and their stories to explore how one size doesn’t fit all
- a set of tech ideas/social app…[Read more]-

Thanks David, sounds like a plan. Let me know if you need help with anything.

Hi All
A NDA funded project I have been working on entitled ‘Sus-IT’ (Sustaining ICT use to promote autonomy and independence) has put together a short video which highlights many of the issues older people face when deciding whether to continue using technology. You can watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyx6p-vqQAA
We also…[Read more]

Thanks for the video Jatinder – great exploration of the challenges. What the solutions? I thought the reaction to the tablet was interesting, raising the question: is it worth continuing to promote computers, even if you are trying to re-engage existing users? If their kit needs upgrading, wouldn’t (say) a low-cost Android tablet be more…[Read more]

A good set of presentations and slides here
Just came across them doing some research

Thanks Alex – great resource. From that and other work I sense there is lots of research and broad agreement on the issues.
However, there’s also lots of organisations competing with each other for funding, not a lot of collaboration, and great difficulty in getting any existing solutions widely adopted. What’s your perspective (if you feel able…[Read more]

Thanks Steve, Jatinder for events. More please, from anyone.
By way of update, I had a chat last week with Nominet Trust about how we might finish up drafting and publication of the report here – http://bit.ly/WPRGAR – with strong links to all the background resources http://storify.com/dtlater#stories
We also talked about other development in…[Read more] -

Hi folks… I’m new to this group and wanted to share a lovely video with you to get things started. Last year, I met 86 year old Betty, from Melksham, Wiltshire, who uses technology every day of her life. We filmed her talking about her experiences of the web and Facebook – it’s guaranteed to make you smile. You can see the vid on our…[Read more]

Hi Jenny – welcome to the group, and through you to Betty on Facebook! I love the line in the video about “I’m more in touch with my nephew than his father is”
Where do you think the balance is these days between computers, smartphones, tablets etc? Someone said to me the other day “we shouldn’t bother too much with computer training because…[Read more] -

This will be an intriguing challenge for Glasgow Housing Association. Something like 60 to 70% of their tenants do not see the point of a digital device. Carnegie Trust research is coming out soon.
My money is on tablets being the most used device

I see the International Longevity Centre is holding an event looking at public service and demographic change – i.e. ageing. A telling quote from their advert is – “The Committee on Public Service and Demographic Change has today published its report, stating “No Government so far has had a vision and coherent strategy [for an ageing society];…[Read more]

Steve – belated thanks for that infographic showing how people are prepared to use digital for health information and consultation. While it does show how far people are comfortable with this, it also shows friends and family second only to personal doctors as trusted sources, and also suggests healthcare practitioners rate online more highly than…[Read more]

Lots of great ideas David. Communities of practice usually require facilitation to be effective – this could be quite a task. And probably some of the content of the online store also needs to be made available to those not yet online – as a way of encouraging them to get online. If you succeed in getting even some of this moving, it will be…[Read more]

I’ve posted a summary of the exploration and recent posts together with some ideas on next steps. They are:
Develop an online store or market place of useful tech stuff for later in life – sites, apps, methods, guides that people and carers can use for wellbeing and amelioration. This would contribute to the wider digital inclusion policies…[Read more]

I wrote it early in the morning – it could do with an edit to the grammar!
Here is a bit of audio from back in 2010 when I had been ’teaching’ digital skills to small groups in my community for 12 months or so http://audioboo.fm/boos/664503-kate-norman-interviewed-by-cathy-aitchison-at-ndi10
Thanks Kate – great audio about learning around th kitchen table! I wonder if we could Skype some more interviews with other ”champions”. It would bring some reality to the two support programme plans I mention in this post http://socialreporters.net/?p=1018
