I came across this story this morning about people working till later in life and it made me wonder whether we have taken sufficient cognisance of this fact in this project? How can technology help people stay working longer?
One in four people between 65 and 74 are still earning a wage, report…[Read more]

Thanks John – great contribution that chimes with this from Steve Dale – in a slightly different context – on the future of professional sharing as personal, mobile and appified http://socialreporter.com/?p=1747
I agree with you that we should focus on what this means for everyone, and not just professional use.
It’s happening already. Are the…[Read more]-

I think they model ”solutions” on what their offices look like. Banks of tethered desktop computers. Meanwhile, in the real world, the rest of us are working on laptops on trains and in coffee shops, and the majority of ordinary people are Facebooking on their mobiles.

I came across this today, via a tweet. I wonder if this has relevance to this work … Top five regrets of the dying http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2012/feb/01/top-five-regrets-of-the-dying?CMP=twt_gu

No. 4 seems relevant and could be used to help convince some of the benefits of being online.

Interesting article about social media giving older people more self-esteem and better social connections. Although there could be a bit of chicken-and-egg in this http://on.mash.to/XdMMjC

Thanks John – your point below sums it all up. I think this will resonate with a lot of people in the field, so let’s see if we can put some ideas together on how to move forward. I’ll also look at strengthening this point in the draft.

Thanks John. I must admit I didn’t specifically have Digital Technology for Later in Life when I wrote it, but the sentiments in your blog post are very similar to my ”It’s the people not the technology, stupid!” http://steve-dale.net/2012/10/25/social-collaboration-its-the-people-not-the-technology-stupid/

I agree John. I’m concerned that too much focus may be given to getting people online without associating this with the ongoing support. If support isn’t easily available for those who were a bit dubious in the first place, they will soon give up and will be even harder to persuade/nudge a second time.

I’ve been re-lookig at history of literacy and current ideas of literacy (which is lower amongst older people generally) to find any analogies of use and work. Interesting phd study of story telling, literacy and digital literacy here by Bowen Lauren and ealier work called Literate Lives in the Information Age.

Re your point about universal credit – the Work & Pensions select committee yesterday urged the government to delay it unless certain issues could be resolved – one of which was online access. I’m not impressed by the DWP response that universal credit will be accessed online “because that reflects the experience of working people”.

Hi Martin,
I read the same report. I think it just goes to reinforce how disconnected this government is from the real workings of society. Gov need to think about this as a people/behaviour issue and not a technology/accessibility problem.

I am wondering if there has been any discussion about interfaces? At the Our Digital Planet Exhibition (http://www.ourdigitalplanet.co.uk) we have come across a number of older people who have real problems with typing. For a large part of their careers, typing was seen as only necessary for secretarial roles, and they find it harder to pick up in…[Read more]

I did raise something about this as one of the propositions. i.e. doing more with voice-activated technology. Smart TVs are already available that allow voice and gesture control and they are set to get smarter. This may also help those who find remote controls too complicated. See New Scientist : http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21628905.300-customise-your-favourite-tv-show.html?full=true#bx289053B1

I’ve blogged about this elsewhere (http://wp.me/ppLRZ-pN), but my experience of working on Nominet Trust’s Our Digital Planet project has confirmed some of the things I already knew, and opened my eyes to other issues, regarding older people’s attitude to digital technologies. And, attitude is one of the key determinants. The standout for me…[Read more]

Good point John. Most job-searching these days is done online so those without access may miss some opportunities.Online access also suits some part-time home-based working which could be appropriate for this age group. We should include it as another reason for helping people get online.
